With increasing surface sealing, many municipalities face a growing risk of flooding and greater strain on the public sewer network. At the same time, wastewater charges are rising. Against this background, rainwater infiltration is becoming more relevant in Obertshausen, particularly in the context of new construction, renovation or redevelopment projects. Modern infiltration systems allow rainwater to be collected directly on the property and channelled into the ground in a controlled manner. Returning water to the natural cycle complies with current technical standards and is increasingly required by authorities.

The installation of soakaway systems (German: Rigolen) is an effective measure for decentralised stormwater management. This approach helps relieve the public infrastructure while supporting environmental protection. Additional measures such as permeable paving on driveways or parking areas can also result in a lasting reduction of rainwater drainage charges.

If construction work takes place above existing soakaways, a supplementary CCTV inspection may be appropriate. This allows for early documentation of any damage caused by the works.

We are available to answer any questions regarding the planning, implementation or maintenance of infiltration systems in Obertshausen.

Rainwater infiltration in Obertshausen

Why is rainwater infiltration important?

Surfaces such as roofs, paths or roads are impermeable and prevent rainwater from naturally seeping into the ground. Instead, it runs off across the surface and flows into the public drainage system. During heavy rainfall, this can overwhelm the sewer infrastructure, causing backflow or localised flooding. A locally managed rainwater infiltration system helps to relieve pressure on public sewers, reduce flood damage and support the natural water cycle.

Whether using swales, soakaway pits or underground infiltration trenches, professional planning of such systems can protect the property against the effects of heavy rain while contributing to sustainable resource management.

The video (in German) explains the relevance of modern infiltration systems and how various solutions can be effectively implemented.

What is decentralised rainwater infiltration?

Decentralised rainwater infiltration involves discharging rainwater directly into the soil at the point where it falls – typically on the property itself. This is only permitted if the water is free from environmentally harmful substances. Technical requirements and planning principles are set out in the German standard DWA-A 138.

What is a soakaway (Rigole)?

Soakaways are underground infiltration elements that collect rainwater and release it gradually into the ground. They are typically made of gravel, plastic modules or storage units designed to temporarily hold and then slowly discharge the water in a controlled manner. Soakaway systems are used when surface infiltration is insufficient or not feasible due to structural constraints.

The design of each system is tailored to the local ground conditions, the size of the area and the expected volume of rainwater.

Amendment of the Water Resources Act

l
According to the amended German Water Resources Act (WHG), more rainwater is to be infiltrated instead of being drained into the sewage system as was previously the case. According to § 55 para. 2 WHG, the mixing of rainwater and wastewater is to be avoided. In fact, this regulation means the end of the principle of mixed sewerage.

Furthermore, rainwater infiltration systems are increasingly prescribed in development plans. Modern infiltration trenches offer various advantages over classic rainwater infiltration (troughs, gravel):

High storage and infiltration capacity (only 30% of the gravel volume is required for the same capacity).
Less land required (less excavation)
Hardly any restriction on surface usability (in contrast to swale infiltration)

Questions and answers

Do you have questions
about Rainwater Infiltration in Obertshausen?

Do I need a permit to install an infiltration trench?

Yes, as a rule, approval must be obtained from the responsible lower water and soil protection authority. A soil permeability test (e.g. using a seepage test) and proof of infiltration in accordance with DWA-A 138 are also often required. We will be happy to help you with the application and professional planning.

Can I save on fees with an infiltration system?

Yes, in many cities – including Frankfurt – there are reductions or exemptions from the rainwater fee if rainwater seeps away on the property and is not discharged into the sewer system. A certificate from the specialist company is usually a prerequisite.

What is rainwater infiltration?

Rainwater infiltration refers to the targeted discharge of rainwater into the ground in order to relieve the burden on the sewage system and promote the natural water cycle. It is extremely important and is now mandatory in many municipalities, especially for new buildings, conversions and renovations.
