Leak Testing in Hanau
Legislation is placing increasing pressure on businesses and homeowners to maintain their wastewater systems in an environmentally responsible way.
DIN EN 1610 requires leak testing of newly installed sewer pipes as part of the building approval process.
For existing drainage systems, testing is governed by DIN 1986 Part 30 and the relevant technical bulletins issued by the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA, formerly ATV).
Tightness Testing of Wastewater Pipes
– How the Test Works
Is a Leak Test Mandatory?
Even though the requirement for leak tightness testing under the Hessian Wastewater Self-Monitoring Ordinance (EKVO) has been suspended for private households in Hesse since March 2012, many municipalities are still imposing their own deadlines. A relevant example is the City of Frankfurt am Main.
Under the EKVO, all private sewer connection pipes would have had to be inspected by a certified specialist company by December 31, 2024. Exceptions applied to pipes constructed or permanently rehabilitated after January 1, 1996; these would have had to be inspected by the end of 2039. This requirement is therefore currently irrelevant.
